Anyways, both the 1980 and 2003 Tetsuwan Atom anime are subbed if you really need subs to watch a series for toddlers.

I think I've seen it at least once in some older manga, still incredibly fucking stupid and awful, but at least that took effort, I would prefer, if that effort was put to good use instead, but oh well.

Anime fandom has poor taste and many biases, plus translators get scared away by large episode counts for some reason.

To translate an anime from scratch, without a JP sub file to act as guideline (which is true of many longrunning anime) takes days per episode.
You need to

translate (TL)

adjust the translation to actually make sense in English (QC/QA)

time your subtitles

style your subtitles (some groups don't do this)

realize you can't upload to nyaa anymore so cope and upload to an alt site instead

All so you can upload something you'll get maybe two comments on before it's stolen by some aggregate and your name is scrubbed from it.

You'd have to be a psycho to use your knowledge of Japanese to translate anime for free this late in the game.

It's just a huge time investment to work on a project with a ton of episodes. You either need a ton of time per day to get through something somewhat quickly, or take years to go through a project at a slower pace like the team working on Dr. Slump & Arale-chan.

Just because it's not translated doesn't mean it's badly preserved or whatever.

That said, there's literally only one guy that has any interest in fansubbing black and white shows.

The '66 series was actually lost media for a couple decades until someone luckily found 16mm prints of the whole series collecting dust in a TV station's archives, so even the Japanese audience didn't have access to it for a while, let alone anyone else. And it's black and white, which has doomed it to irrelevance in the west regardless.
The '80s remake did get officially licensed and subbed, so there's that at least.

Dororo, Yokai Ningen Bem, Attack No. 1, Mach Go Go Go, and Kurenai Sanshiro all have some form of complete, English language release.

Although I don't think anybody has ripped Discotek's Bem release online as of yet.

Old anime and manga are badly preserved because they were meant to be cheap, disposable entertainment. Manga got low runs and is printed in the cheapest toilet paper available. Anime masters would get overwritten all the time to save resources or just thrown away to clear up office space. It is the same with all mediums. Most old games, movies and books are lost media because no one in their right mind would've consider them worth preserving at the time. Thats why only the most popular, most influential works have a chance of surviving, and even then you have shit like the dragon ball situation.
That being said, all of Tezuka's works are well preserved and readily available.
