I remember the Mugen Train movie had like 2 showing of subs to 1 showing of dubs. The Demon Slayer dub is pretty awful but I thought it was typical.

I personally just can't handle how bad they butcher the scripting to try to match Japanese lip flaps and the tiny number of people they cast which means they never have anyone available for specialty voices. So they always end up having some incredibly unconvincing squeaky actor doing a horribly fake old man voice and things like that.

Is there any hard data as far as demos go about the age range for people who prefer dub vs sub, I do think younger viewers are fine with dubs in their native language and subs are just normalized with older viewers, like I can only assume that like 70% of the people watching Fire Force stateside are watching the dub because it's a shonen that's actually appealing to the intended demo outside of glorious nippon, and the kiddo's consider anime as normal as any other form of animation

And it makes sense, American anime dubs are done by the same handful of rejects who couldn't get into film or theatre or even fucking television (look no further than Johnny Yong "Power Rangers" Bosch). I know the Pokemon dub isn't good, but I'm too used to the English Pokemon names to ever switch to watching it subbed. Hearing Charizard be called "Lizardon" after 25+ years of Charizard being Charizard to me would drive me up a wall.

There's an English names edit of the fansubs for Pokémon horizons that I recommend watching. I totally get the struggle of adapting to Japanese names. I find it interesting that fansubers go with Laplace, where as Nob Ogasawara went with Lapras. Totally weird, totally odd, but at least someone is fansubbing it.
