There are no stakes in Overlord. There is no main antagonist or risk other than Ainz being paranoid. The main cast never seems to have any character development.

Flashback tell us they fought the chosen heroes of the "good gods", to free mankind from their grasp
He seems to have used the energy core of his castle to avoid total destruction.
His friends are dead, no Super-minions in sight.
He uses the energy left to regenerate some lesser-minions, no way to revive his equals.

Go on to gather information on the world, it seems thousand of years passed.
His enemies, the gods, still exist but are weakened, they manipulate species to make them brainless worshiper.
The gods cannot act directly as it open a crack that allow to kill them

Start planning, he and his minion will pass as adventurer to gather information
Realize there's still Super-minions fighting, all continuing their last task for thousands of years.
He has to fight them (show them discreetly who he really is) give them new orders.

Infiltrate and take over pro-god, destroy the holy relics the gods use to control them
Take over a few kingdoms,
Eventually the gods realize he is back, the mask goes off, goes full Overlord
The gods pour their energy training new chosen heroes to kill his super-minion then him

The chosen heroes finally reach his castle
Climatic battle
Overlord sacrifice himself, trick the hero into breaking the core, killing the remaining god
Mankind celebrate, but freed, the religion slowly collapse

Better idea: Clementine becomes a recurring, once-a-season antagonist. That way she maintains her fun, evil traits while not overstaying her welcome.

Instead put actual threats that can stand against him, forcing him to use the full strategy of his various minions, spells and strategy just to clinch a win against each enemy.
