Those kinds of illustrations are definitely an artifact of the era. The mid to late 2000's had them all over the place. This was back when a super detailed face was an acceptable punchline. You have to accept that it's a slightly dated. We don't hate all old movies just because they're black and white.

Just do what I did and read the manga instead. I don't care how good the voice acting is or how mindblowing the soundtrack is - it's just not worth it if shrill, obnoxious, atmosphere-shattering, mood-ruining babyshit is lurking around every corner.
This shit you see in 'faithful' adaptations like FMAB or Hellsing Ultimate is what happens when you literally reproduce manga panel gags 1:1 on screen instead of trying to organically adapt or alter them to work within an audio-visual-based medium. There's a world of difference between one goofy but otherwise fleeting (not to mention silent) panel on a page and twenty uninterrupted seconds of loud, brightly colored super-deformed clown shit with matching sound effects on screen. It doesn't work because different mediums have different strengths and limitations, so what may work well in one medium won't necessarily work well in another, despite how 'faithful' it is to the source material. You know, like you're supposed to actually ADAPT the original elements to fit the new medium, rather than trying to fruitlessly jam a square peg into a round hole.

Hold on now, why are you blaming the author for shit in the anime? Manga is a different medium, those goofy faces fit just fine when they're just a small drawing in the corner of the page. It doesn't fuck up the pacing to have the characters having a silly little argument for a couple of panels like it does in an anime where it has to take up the entire screen and take up actual time. This is an adaptation problem, not a flaw of the original work.
