That just happens when the LI is apparently too cool/perfect/mature for a social abortion of an MC and is on a different league. Parallel to that, make the LI not mind dating other "better" suitors and even consider going the slippery slope dating or getting involved with shady people (JAV-Showbiz ikemen/Yakuza chads/Delinquent gangs/shady rich heirs/Mr. Perfect guys) for maximum misery. Also make MC have satellite love interests who larp as people who have the best regards for him and consider LI as the worst thing happening to him, but on the inside are selfish and malicious-to-downright evil and awful and only want the MC as their trophy husbando.
