I assumed that their peak would be right before the ceremonial duel. Yugi himself grew after fighting Bakura, but Atem having his memories probably makes little difference besides them not getting fucked over if Ra gets summoned in sphere mode because none of them speak ancient egyptian.

No, he came in like 4 episodes before the end, dropped some lore on us that the universe is literally a trading card, and ended up just being a vehicle for an admittedly pretty cool final scene and final message.
On that note, what are your personal rankings/ratings on GX's season finale antagonists?
Yubel>Saiou>Kagemaru>Darkness
Yubel > Saio > Kagemaru > Darkness
Darkness must suck really badly if Kagemaru of all characters is ranked higher than the former.
Yubel and Saio are amazing villains and are given the proper screentime to develop them and tie them in to everything. Darkness is like a filler episode plotline.

Kagemaru at least did something. Honestly S1 would've been better if Daitoukuji was the actual big villain, but even still, he's better than Darkness. Saio had the best presence of all the villains, but Yubel is just iconic.
