Their friendship was always a bit one-sided and awkward from the start. Himari was this popular girl who, against all odds, kept seeking him out. It was never an organic bond or the result of any immediate, mutual connection (we almost never see Yu reaching out to her, for instance). It's clear he couldn’t even grasp why she was talking to him, could hardly believe it himself, so I assume for a while he simply didn’t care about her business with the popular crowd (where he didn't belong)

After I read the LN I realized she's the least toxic person for Yuu but it requires him to man up and put crazy amount of romantic pressure on her
