The big issue is people mixing up proper set up with emotional satisfying. Yeah all the stuff about Machu ruining her life and taking everything for granted was set up. It just feels so hollow is all like I’m supposed to care about seeing both of them getting used by groups when they both dont really care about the grander plot going on. They really don’t have anyway to gain happiness anymore too they have no one left and don’t care about each other. Why am I supposed to still care about them this feels like it should be the end of their story instead of just having to watch them be tools.

They're more like character archetypes than actual characters, they want to go to Earth to "be free" and they like a boy, but that's the full extent of their characters. And Shuji is just a non-character, we literally do not know fucking anything about him. We're halfway trough the series and the main characters as still extremely neglected in the narrative

I felt this problem with like the first 5 episodes of the show. The characters dynamics were really weak, and as I feared, there wasn't enough time to develop their stories aside from "lets keep clan-battling to get money to go to earth.". Now Tsurumaki threw a love triangle just to keep the plot going and it still falls short, because both Nyaan's and Machu's reasoning to like Shuji is still very poor character-wise. Most things don't get explained and they stand around in this going to earth dynamic until Episode 6 where the love triangle gets thrown in and it still falls short.
Although today's episode did somewhat remedy this lack of plot, given now that I want to see what happens to Machu and Nyaan, but I still think the UC nostalgia slop won't be enough to make this show actually good.
