One Piece is the darkest shonen

We like to joke that OP is a goofy pirate manga and “despite being dark, it’s usually at a surface level be the story is primarily made for kids.”

And yet we’ve still gotten implications of sexual assault/abuse with the traumatized Boa sisters, actual sexual assault ending in pregnancy recently with Ginny, CONSTANT slavery which happens so often it gets undermined but is horrendous when you think about it, biological warfare, several genocides in the story, a damnear biblical witch-hunt of pregnant women and infants suspected of being Roger’s kid, an island of forgotten people living as toys and watching their families go on without them (Dressrosa), cannibalism, child trafficking and experimentation/drugging, lmao at this point we got satanism with Brook’s timeskip and Saturn, necrophilia (Hogback and Vasco Shot), and probably some things I’m missing.

I get that OP maintains its upbeat veneer most of the time but if you actually look at the world, it’s much darker than most if not all shonen worlds.

I wouldn't call it the darkest, but I think its darkness gets downplayed compared to other shonen because of its artstyle.

Read any shounen from the 70s and 80s you dumb zoomer.
Warm Piss is for literal toddlers who haven't read more than two other manga.

The One Piece world is darker even if it isn't shown.

You are conflating how graphic a series is with how dark.

It matters less how much gruesome shit is shown and it matters more what you know is happening.

Death Note is more serious but in the end its in present time where slavery is abolished. While in one piece there is open genocide parties and a slave trade and pirate rapist running around.

Its kinda hard to top what is realistically happening in the One Piece world frequently that Oda just decides not to show for obvious reasons

So basically you are talking about depiction of dark themes while OP is asking about the darkness of the fictional worlds overall

Name anything that happens here that is darker than in One Piece.

DARKNESS

One Piece has literal children getting crucified, but yet people are saying that Hunter X Hunter and stuff like this is darker?

dare I say, soft seinen

I would say Hunter x Hunter is probably darker as a whole, but I do agree that the world itself is very dark.

How is Hunter X Hunter darker as a whole?

It has much of the same stuff in it, just with a modern day context. Child trafficking still exists in the HxH world and is a huge part of the Phantom Troupe backstory.

OP has children getting experimented on and tortured. Along with crucifixion.

I'm not saying it doesn't, I'm just saying HxH has a lot of that implied as well. Not necessarily crucifixion, but rape and such are implied.

But what makes Hunter X Hunter darker in that regard?

One Piece has literal children getting crucified

when ? dont remember. In latest chapters ?

read more than 1 manga

I think it's how it's presented. They're about equal in content, but One Piece makes you read between the lines more.
Doflamingo and Rosinante getting crucified as children.

hxh99 can get pretty dark at times

Tell me what shonen is darker.
In OP it's more commonplace I think.

So did Fairy Tail. And it's child's stuff compared to Rave Master.

Rave Master

one of the best opening even to this day

That's not particularly dark in comparison to One Piece.

There's no blood or really anything shown here. This isn't particularly dark.

Your mirror shows the darkest nigger.

How about come with an actual argument?

HxH has really fucked implications like:
-orphans being used for snuff cp (backstory of the pahntom troupe)
-children being groomed as sex slaves from birth (latest arc)

Compare that to stuff like Big Mom eating her family? Doflamingo's backstory? Kuma's backstory?

Like I said earlier, One Piece is more implicit while HxH is more explicit, but One Piece doesn't necessarily have it more than HxH even if it's implied.

I feel like OP doesn't take itself as seriously in its portrayal of dark themes as HxH, even if it's still awful

OP takes itself seriously with the dark themes. Just because it isn't shown doesn't make it not darker than HxH.

I'm the biggest Oda dickrider you've ever met, but One Piece is not darker than HxH

Have you read HxH?
I've read both series

Compare that to stuff like Big Mom eating her family

Chimera Ant queen had similar feats

Doflamingo's backstory?

Tserriednch is darkypoo too

Kuma's backstory?

didn't read yet

This is definitely a presentation discussion

isn't HxH the darkest? There's implied rape and that one girl from the spiders' flashback that got literally raped and turned into mush and then stuffed into a bag/box for her friends to find in the woods.

Yes. How is it darker?

honestly even Yu Yu Hakusho was darker with the whole "black tape" thing, which was a recording of the most fucked up shit possible.

Sexual violence against literal children

Oda's a coward. All his darkness and tension happen in flashbacks, but all present events are happy go lucky joyful adventures of Strawhat Luffy and the gang where there are rarely consequences and the universe bends over backwards to protect characters. Kaido can't even kill Kinemon. Luffy's fruit has a will of its own and saves Luffy from death. Fucking ancient Haki in a robot somehow removes the Gorosei from the island. There are no stakes. Kuma's crybaby backstory is sadness porn. And of course it's all ensconsed in Nika lore. Horrible.

The weird tonal shifts in One Piece are the main thing I dislike about the manga right now. You can't have all the stuff you mentioned and things like eye-popping gags or Zoro getting lost for the 50th time at the same time. It should be 90% of one thing and 10% of another.

OP has children being crucified.

Being crucified is not as bad as being raped before being dismembered

Truth be told, Doflamingo came out pretty alright

whoa....... that's so fricking dark......

Just because it isn't shown on screen doesn't mean it's not darker.

Alright, you win

OP is definitely the darkest manga I've ever read, it really keeps me awake at night

No arguments now?

Why are you responding to a post about Eden's Zero that shows a literal child not only being crucified, but it being implied (Or rather, straight-up told) that the psycho chainsawed him to pieces while forcing his sister to watch, which is a massive plot point in regards to her being mindbroken.
That's not even the only fucked up scene with this particular character.

And because it's wan piss.

The Elusive Samurai has had children being raped (albeit off screen) and then killed (on screen)
Hell One Piece hasn't even had a child being actually dismembered yet

No, you've left me truly speechless with your brilliant Doflamingo example

Man, dark subject matter as a substitution for good tone is a trap every new generation falls into huh

Even Rumiko Takahashi has children being prostituted by their orphan prostitution ring-running parents

The tonal dissonance is annoying. You can absolutely have comedies with dark stuff, but the way Oda skirts things is too annoying. I'd rather the CDs just being comically evil rather than hidden evil with a comic exterior. Then you have these newer more serious CDs that Oda had to bring out because he realized none of the bubble goofballs have been threatening enough.

Do someone have the original threads for when the Ginny rape manga chapter came out?
I wanna re-read the reactions again. It was pure gold.

implications of sexual assault/abuse with the traumatized Boa sisters

To be fair, that was hot as fuck.
