More than before I think I've figured out what this series is about. Dreams unmet, and those who seem to be reaching out to get them. The only reason why Machu and Nyaan are both so fixated on Shuji is because from two different perspectives, he represents the thing that they respectively desire. In Machu's case, she wants a place to belong and people to belong to, and the Kira-Kira showed her not only a special higher plane where communication between individuals broke barriers immediately, but also that you can choose who you're interacting with and what you want to convey to them, even if it's ages-old memories. In Nyaan's case, it's total freedom and the power to grasp at it, and the Kira-Kira showed her a space where everything was warping to her will while she was mid-combat, allowing her to both devastate her foes and take control of a life-or-death situation between her and another person with finesse and ease. Shuji is in the middle, though his only participation is being a conduit to show the two that Kira-Kira that splayed their most intimate feelings across the screen. They'll be just as miserable without him and the Kira-Kira as they would be with them, however they will need to meet those goals or they will never be happy in the end.

I don't think you can make that conclusion based on a couple of lines like that because it contradicts what we know from past UC entries. My expectation is still that newtypes will be able to kira kira without shuji but it's true that it hasn't happened in the show without him being involved. But on the other hand he's probably the singular most powerful newtype (or maybe Chalia). We'll just have to wait and see.

It was a neat premise to focus on the industrialist side of the military industrial complex and connecting mobile suit/psycommu tech to medical applications created a solid foundation for the gundam as a symbol of revolution. I was even excited by the choice to use an Utena setup to dig into the corporate cast from an underdog position with a lot of flair. It just ended up being very bland and never wanting to even look at the interesting tensions it created in favor of textbook melodrama with a bloated, uninteresting cast. The artstyle and direction are so sterile that it's never really fun to look at.
