Even though I want to keep the story progressing on schedule for the sake of my readers, there are other things I want to draw but must tearfully erase. It really is full of dilemmas. Theory alone can't solve a dilemma, and it may be only in the world of fiction that we can approach dilemmas. Volume 25 depicts such a dilemma.

I came into this storytime with an open mind as someone who hasn't read JJL since it ended and it's been mixed results. I think I understand/forgive parts of it more now, but overall I still think it's shit. The biggest concession I'll make is that Josuke picking Tsurugi makes more sense than Holly both with his character and the overall writing of the Part. He's effectively a surrogate son of Norisuke who gets along with most of his family by this point, and the whole point of his character arc is realising he isn't Josefumi OR Kira but instead a new being born when they merged. Him coping and clinging to their lives and mission was never a positive development for him and just put him in opposition to the family he'd actually found for himself, and Holly NEVER would have wanted to be saved at the cost of a child's life to begin with anyway. Stuff like Kei being sidelined and Karera being irrelevant are part of this - they're tied to dead men and not him, he shouldn't care about them in the end. You could even argue this is catharsis for Johnny as now the phenomena he caused with his sin have birthed the fruit that saves his bloodline from a curse as well as the man who delivers it to them.

That said: Tsurugi is still a horrible little rape goblin and the Higashikatas are still mostly unlikable psychos so it still feels fucking terrible versus the genuinely sympathetic Holly, Kira, and Josefumi stuff. The actual relationship building between Josuke and them is fucking terrible and comes at the cost of the far more interesting alternatives he had. It's not "good", it's just "coherent" at best.

Another thing I'll give it is Norisuke's personality "retcon" wasn't one. He took in Josuke to have Daiya pry Kira's memories out of him to investigate what was up with a possible lead on a cure and then when Yotsuyu changed the whole stakes of what was going on dropped that shit and took a liking to Josuke

I think it's pretty clearly conveyed Josuke shouldn't have turned on the family that took him in to save Holly at a cost she'd find abhorrent. It's still meant to be tragic, obviously, but all it does is get several people killed and make him go through hell until he decides to save Tsurugi and be accepted by the Higashikatas. I think Araki's intended message isn't hard to decipher, he just wrote it like shit.

Nah that one is pretty obvious too. Kei and Karera are effectively nobody to him in the end and that's why Araki treats them the way he did - it isn't hard to interpret why he did that.

Funnily enough, I've been playing Layton games alongside JJL's storytime and let me tell you something, despite those games heavily relying on you solving puzzles to progress the story, it's waaaaaay less of a slog and barely drags (except of that one part in Lost Future), insane how a franchise for children that came out of nowhere is way more engaging and well crafted than this 'mature' manga made by an experienced author.
It helps that the mysteries are resolved, has good foreshadowing and it actually gives you characters to care about.

HOWEVER, he was pretty mentally instable from seeing his brother dead in a corridor in a lake of blood and the whole thing with Norisuke. Not to mention it was actually calamity causing him to attack as he wasn't violent before Yasuho got the intention to call Kei.

Something that irks me in this part is how everyone knows things they shouldn't like Joshu in this volume SOMEHOW knowing Josuke's backstory. Part 4 had shit like literally everyone somehow knowing Jotaro could stop time but this really hurts in JJL that was mystery-centered considering how the entire conflict for the second half came from somehow Josuke and Jobin getting into Damo's mind/reading the script.

It's only a thing for the main characters. While there are distinctions, the male protagonists' facial structure in this part is too same-y for my comfort. Compare this to part 3. Hell, even to part 7. And it's a lot worse for female characters. Yasuho's face isn't distinct at all.

It VASTLY improves the pacing and adds things like morioh radio. Partially becasue manga had an atrocious pacing. Also the color scheme is pretty good.
Its biggest problem was not saving the budget for important moments like Killer queen reveal thus shitting the bed in important points. To this day its baffling to me how the 'I refuse' part looks better than all the KQ animation.

An issue I have with early Jojolion is the outright hostility Josuke and Yasuho have to deal with from the Higashikatas. In DiU there are a lot of opponents who once dealt with become allies or are at least neutralised, and for the most part you can vibe with why that conflict was truly resolved and understand why Okuyasu for example is now a good friend. Between Daiya's intent to enslave Josuke and the torment Tsurugi puts Yasuho through, it doesn't feel like they really earn the right to befriend Josuke and have their past antagonism as water under the bridge. Their motives just feel like utter selfishness, as befits the Golden Heart of Morioh. And as we'll see this can undermine the conclusion, which absolutely requires investment in the Higashikatas to appreciate.

Also the pacing was pretty sluggish for those early introductory arcs.

He's a simp in the sense of having insane loyalty towards Jolyne, who he just met and knew for a short while, but he's not a "yes mommy I'll drink my own piss if you'll step on me!!" fag. More of a "I want to fuck you while killing all your enemies" as he likes being in control and has the intelligence to back it up.

The Higashikatas are just straight up evil. A lot of the shitheads in Part 4 were just acting out because they got stands out of nowhere, obviously that still makes them baddies that the heroes have to defeat but I can see why someone would start doing the kind of petty bullshit people in Part 4 are doing because they suddenly woke up and found out they could summon a bunch of little bugs that can collect change.
Daiya just tries to rape and steal Josuk8's memory entirely unprompted, Noriuske acts like a fucking freak until he decides to stop, Jobin lobotomizes a bug in front of Josuke, and Joshu is Joshu (nobody else matters).

It's because he's the only one that gets proper justification for acting how he acts. I mean sure Noriuske wants to protect the business, Tsurugi doesn't want to fucking die, but Daiya has nothing going for her except being evil.
Jobin on the other hand is just very very well written, okay sure I could boil him down too to also just wanting to protect his family and not wanting to see his son die but he also has that "childish" side to him.
It also helps a lot that he actually fucking gets shit done. Name one thing Noriuske does.

I disagree on part 4 characters winning their redemptions. I am only ok with Okuyasu but rest of the guys were straight up sociopaths or psycophats like Tamami and Hazamada, only becoming gag characters after getting beaten severly.
That said I agree with Higashikata's needing an actual arc to prove themselves. There were some easy opportunities where Araki could have done this but we got nothing in the end.

Dragon's dream has some good qualities but it's weaknesses make it a bellow average arc in my opinion

Anasui sabotages the whole fight by just being there taking away all the tension in the part that so far manages tension in a magnificent way

The resolution is kinda lame because Anasui just one shots Kenzo because he was always able to do so

It's got some good fights but yeah, I'll concede it's weaker than 3-5 at least right before it overall. I think part of it is also taste - JJL's weak fights tend to be longer, and they're also weirdly often automatic stand chases which I guess might be something a lot of people find particularly bothersome.

It's not about being inconsequential. It's that Araki explicitly constructs a series of mysteries then fumbles them, so if you ever let yourself get invested in any of them and paid attention to details while theorising about what the answers were you just feel burned by the constant barrage of retcons and dropped plot threads. A lot of Jojo parts start out with a string of monster of the week stories that introduce the extended cast without actually moving the plot forward for ages - JJL just happens to do that while fucking up the main story it sets up, whereas the rest usually take their time even getting to it.

One of the arcs that are better than I remember, it fails to move the story forward (like half the arcs on early Jojolion) but stablished a solid dynamic between the 3 main heroines, and has a cool finisher (something almost no fucking fight in Jojolion has, seriously People don't talk about this enough Josuke just lacks genuine cool moments like the one against Ozone baby, this is mainly because the stands in Jojolion leave little room for Interaction

Chocolate Disco may be bad and Who Shot Johnny might be even fucking worse (maybe one of the worst things Araki has ever wrote) but I still think Chocolate Disco is a better read than 90% of post Vitamin-C fights.

Rock Humans are slightly more known about in-universe, though they are mainly considered urban legends or folklore.

One particular story regarding them is that they were, once upon a time, ordinary flesh-and-blood humans.

One day, some people came across a "fruit" that could grant them incredible power and immortality. A fruit that God forbade any living creature to eat.

Believing they could have the power of God, these humans took the fruit anyway and ate it, granting themselves incredible powers (Stands) and nigh-immortality (in fact, it would be theorized the apple in the Garden of Eden may or may not have been a Rokakaka, though it would be schizo-speculation)

God, of course, finds out about this and is pissed. He curses these particular humans, removing "the mark of His grace" on them and cursing them to live "below their fellow men, no different than stones

Their emotions, their personalities, even down to the ability to create and evolve, stagnate. A rock feels no love. A rock can't evolve, only erode. A rock feels nothing, makes nothing, and becomes only dust

As Rock Humans can only mate with others of their kind, they can never truly rejoin human society. Instead living off it like parasites, unable to contribute or experience it for themselves.

Although they put on a mighty ego, boasting about how they will overcome humanity like Urban Guerilla, it would be heavily implied the Rock Humans seek the Rokakaka in order to get back into natural human society.

A "new Rokakaka" could have them fully swap bodies with humans, allowing them to regain their lost "grace" AND keep their abilities.

This follows the theme about "breaking a curse" -- the Rock Humans want to break their curse of being outside humanity while the Higashikatas want to break the curse of the Rock Disease

It's weird to have the one guy whose exact ability is bolting body parts together and he suggests doing something different. This part is full of retarded shit like this. Characters you'd think have the perfect ability for something and then they don't use it. Imagine 4suke sees one of his allies injured and doesn't even consider fixing him with Crazy Diamond and the rest of the arc is spent trying to rush that person to the hospital instead.

It is mostly personal preference yeah, part 6 clearly sticks with a lot of people and I don't think it's as bad as it was considered years ago. The point you made about it constantly having something to do to me just feels like a wild goose chase. Stand arrow shard! Jotaro! Disc! Sports Maxx! DIO's bone! Green baby! DIO's sons! Cape Canaveral! It has way way way more direction than jojolion, as in physical direction, there's always a place for the characters to seek in the near-horizon. That gets cancelled out for me by how silly the heaven plan is.

Something Jojolion and Stone ocean have in common is that they are the only parts that genuinely were making me fall sleep during most fights, maybe it has to do with the hyper specific stand abilities that these two parts are full of.

SDC's first stand fights were kind of meh, but the stands were simple enough for the fights to not feel like they were dragging out, also the exotic scenarios were fun. SO, DIU and Jojolion have the worst settings in jojo: a shit prison and modern japan, so boring.
