Nayuta advised him to just make a run for it, but he refused.
After taking out 3 hybrids, he fell over and got ambushed by a mob, which led to Nayuta risking her life in order to save her. She used one of the controlled humans to carry Denji away, while Barem manipulated the mob into assaulting Nayuta.
He didn't abandon her, but he put her at significant risk by fighting the hybrids, telling Nayuta to just get away from him, but Nayuta stayed in order to protect Denji from the mob, because of the Control Devil's strong attachment to family.
