It's been a while since I watched Otori, so I could be missing something crucial here, but at the time it rubbed me the wrong way and I would say that if you act like a 'perfect little angel' that means you aren't rude or impatient or greedy and that should put you way far above many, if not most people.
Even if you're doing it because you want just want people to like you, it's still good behavior and I don't think anyone should give you shit for it. I would much rather be neighbors with a Nadeko than a Shinobu or Hitagi, or maybe using examples you can relate to more: a polite yet dishonest Japanese man than an honest and impolite nigger.
