How do I get into GitS, to prepare for this? I only watched the original movie, but it felt rather pretentious, I didn't like it, even though the animation was great.

You can just read the manga, but I'd also recommend reading the series Appleseed first, its just 4 volumes, albeit unfinished. Most of GITS is a thematic and philosophical continuation of Appleseed and you're missing half the conversation without that.
Either way, the manga, films, and various TV anime are all in different continuities.
The GITS manga is split into 3 sections, 1, 1.5, and 2. 1 and 2 are complete narratives, 1.5 is a collection of loosely one-shots that Shirow put out while taking a break from the series between the major installments.
GITS 1, is very 80s Sci-Fi. It drops you into the deep end on a lot of things and is mostly about showing off the setting and then Shirow lecturing you on his merging of technological development and traditional Japanese shintoism. Motoko's personality is going to be pretty familiar to you if you're watched much 80s-90s anime.

GITS 2, is a very challenging read for a first timer and it genuinely may take you 2-3 readthroughs to understand what is even happening on a given page. It is not that complex in content, but it has the worst presentation of any manga I have ever read.
Imagine a detective story, where you don't know what the detective is looking for, barely understand how they're looking for it, and have almost no comprehension of why they're looking for it until you finish the entire story and then try and loop back around to figure out how it all came together. And this is done without and greater meaning, it is just really poorly communicated.
But it is worth reading because it does at the same time have some of the best discussion of futurism and the future of human evolution in manga.

I think there's a subset of mangafags that severely misrepresent what GITS is over Makoto being severely out of character in the first movie and I'm quite tired of it.
