Most people start hating her because of the boring part she has after Nise. You are riding the high of Nise and then get met with Nekomonogatari Kuro. It can feel like you went back on the progress you made and is also a bit less complex than other stories. This boredom can make you feel uneasy about the cat story that follows immediately after. The second one is a lot better and more interesting but the negative impression may affect your experience. Hanekawa is then etched in as the boring character for many.

Neko Kuro is one of the worst arcs honestly. half the arc is a Jap pun dialogue with the less sexy imouto that doesn't translate into English, and the other half is beating the reader/watcher over the head that Nisio fucked up and had to write a reason why Araragi and Hanekawa aren't together. Too bad that the reasons are half assed bullshit that have to fit within an existing plot, and amount to shit that only makes sense to Nisio.

It is actually strange how far Nisio went simply because he didn't want to write a romance in Monogatari. The unusualness of the series is one of its charm points but Nisio also gets a bit extreme at times when avoiding normal progressions and making everything different.

an interesting take, I always thought the Crab romance was really bland and never went anywhere. Sure you could say it's a slow burn, but outside of the stargazing date and Rendezvous, there's no real romance at all. I prefer Nisio at least marking Araragi as 'taken' with a character who barely appears as opposed to generic harem slop or the 'will they/wont they' slop you see everywhere at all times. I've never thought of it as being an easy out and Nisio choosing to avoid proper romance entirely. It certainly works as a spark that sets off Bake 5 because Cat needs to fuck, emotionally and physically. Hanekawa works really well as an unrequited love, even if Crab is obviously a mistake overall.

There is a recurring current of him being scared of his powers. Part of the thrust of Nise is him putting this all into perspective. He looks at his sisters and realizes two things. There is serious risk he may hurt them in play fights due to being obscenely strong. He also is going to likely outlive them and everyone else. He also has miscellaneous fears relating to humans being food and whatever. He feels shame over his powers and fears that at any moment he may destroy things he loves. You can even see this recently in an internal dialogue he has about his gun and not feeling like he should have it even though it is part of his job. He views himself as a monster. Watching Kiss-Shot eat a guy really did numbers to him.

I'd argue it's as much as they could make it a real danger without a narrator coming in and saying "there is a real danger." Kizu was heavy on 'show don't tell' and took away Araragi's narration almost entirely that is throughout the rest of the series and in the books.

Though I do wish we at some point in the series got the OG narration of the 3 second scene where Hanakawa's skirt flips up in the wind. Araragi's narration of just that three seconds was like two pages long and I'll always remember it because it's how I learned the word "lascivious."

For me Nise is also when we see a few glimpses that he could pretty easily fuck people up once he starts seeing red. Of course, we never actually get to see an Araragi with actual killing intent. But I figured that's essentially his hang-up, kinda that he understands that if he loses it in protecting someone there will be bodies.
