Aura is a proposed spiritual concept of an energy field around living things. That morphed into Aura being an individual person’s vibes (he’s got a dark aura). Recently, Aura is just slang for being cool, like coolness emanating off of them, often just by existing. Aura Farming started out as an accusation, like you’re acting cool in an attempt to gain cool points, but then it got turned into a positive and now when an anime character does something badass he’s aura farming (positive). In effect it’s Gen Z’s version of cool, usually associated with suave and a good outfit, though edge can fall under this category too if they don’t sperg out.
I should specify that aura is normally associated with blue oni nonchalant coolness, rather than red oni hotheadedness. It’s similar to “swag”.

When a character has "Aura" it means they're cool or are doing something cool, but in the confident and suave kind of way. "Aura farming" just means when a character is portrayed as always in that state or are written that they are always doing such actions in the particularly episode or show in general.

Anon, cool as slang came from the 30's and 40's black jazz scene, it was to describe a type of stylish jazz that came out of big band and bebop hence why that type of Jazz, that became prevalent in the 40's and 50's, is known as "Cool Jazz". Aura farming is specifically to say that a character is doing an action, multiple actions, or is constantly acting in a way that makes them look cool, hence the Aura in it would refer to "cool" and the farming would refer to the character actively becoming more cool, or gaining more aura, by doing something or acting in a certain way.
