The fact that they outright undermined and fucked with their own story's pathos and stakes, fundamentally taking a meta approach to it all and screwing with things at seeming random while treating it as an experience designed for veterans that are familiar with what should be happening, just makes that long cook a really insufferable experience since you know they're trying to mess with expectations. If it ain't broke, don't fuckin' try to fix it.
Evangelion Rebuilds
They did the same with Gunbuster/Diebuster and people pretended not to notice
There's something in the Japanese drinking water that compels them to go meta with remakes.
Just pretend the rebuilds don't exist like everyone else does
yeah.
aint broke dont fix it
They werent trying to fix it, they were trying to make money
they were trying to make money
and GAINAX went under cuz they failed lol
Parabains
Gainax didn’t have anything to do with rebuild.
Non-canon AU
It’s really not a big deal.
Since this discussion is done to death, why don’t we talk about how Anno made his self insert a cute litte gay boy
Alright. This is the new thread I guess?
Asuka #1
If Diebuster fans like dying so much why don’t they just fucking kill themselves.
Meta retrospective on Evangelion as a property
Ends by “moving on from Evangelion”
One of the things that must be “moved on from” is Asushin
Thus, Asushin is important to Anno’s conception of “Evangelion”
Happens at One More Final, talking about liking each other “back then”
OG Asushin won, Anno approved.
I didn’t need that movie to tell me Asuka won the Shinjibowl anon.
Metaquels are so shit.
Nigga please don't continue that from the last thread
Just a light workout.
Sadamoto just reused Nadia lol. Maybe he thought cuteness would give him a bit more leeway to being a non-traditional hero. Better for empathy.
No fanwank has come out about how Rebuild is secretly a masterpiece, I was wondering if it ever would.
You got Kensukespammer to switch to his other persona (Codex Entry), that’s pretty fun.
You gotta go to Facebook or (allah forgive me) Reddit for that kind of take.
Hot take: I like the rebuilds. Not as much as the original series plus EoE, but 3 and 4 (especially four) are still great in my opinion
They are overhated and actually have merit. They crumble if compared to the original. I think it was a bad idea from the start to make ego movies without delivering on narrative expectations, but he did what he set out to do. I thought 3.0 ruined any possible chance for Rebuild to have value but the final film recontextualized everything.
You know what? Anno pissing on me for hours and hours is over hated.
Ryan’s a sick puppy.
They’re very selfish movies. I don’t think he thought much about you and me at all.
anon the author literally said on record his main goal with the rebuilds was "to break EVA"
the visuals were bad
i dont care about anything else
Asushin = Eva, confirmed.
I hate the rebuilds because they're so sanitized, especially with the sexuality
Eva was so engaging because the characters actually felt like real people and had real, nuanced flaws and sexuality was actually treated with nuance
having a serious story with a reclusive teenage boy surrounded by girls without any sexual undertone would be a complete disservice to the characters but that's exactly what the rebuilds did, all the "griminess" is stripped out and everyone feels like a hollow caricature of themselves
BUT WAIT THAT WAS ON PURPOSE ACKSHULLY BECAUSE THEY'RE CLONES AND IT'S META LOLOLOL
fuck you anno
The problem is he can set out to break Eva all he wants but there are individual cultures built around each individual character. So while he can dismantle Eva as a narrative, he can do little to impact the secondary aspect of it, which is essentially the Rei/Asuka iconography. You can see that in these threads as well as in how Eva is still marketed and co-opted.
All he really succeeded in doing is say how he feels about the whole thing (and make some moola). Eva is bigger than him.
We do talk about that. Ikuhara is Kaworu, and Shinji is Anno. Ikuhara is Anno’s irl boycrush.
In the originals the sexuality was ugly and narratively relevant. In Rebuild the sexuality is there, but it’s almost entirely audience facing. That’s the big difference to me. It takes a lot of the humanity out of the characters.
I wouldn't call fanservice sexuality
eva was unique for actually having well written sexual themes and it made it much more relatable, the rebuilds just have empty fanservice and it isn't even as good as the fanservice that was in the original
Ugly
Not really.
nta but i'd say it's ugly in the sense of how character's relationships with their sexuality were very fraught and tied up in their negative baggage. asuka wanting to be an adult without understanding it, misato and everything with her father and kaji, etc. not that they or the act itself was depicted in an unattractive way.
Fair play then.
Dawg, hospital scene. When I say ugly I don’t mean the characters are literally ugly.
Eh, sex is sex. Mari seems like an extremely sexual person despite being a 14 year old or a grown woman in the body of a 14 year old or whatever, but you aren’t meant to think about the implications of that. Contrast Asuka for example.
you guys think you're so smart
just say you don't go outside
EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA EVASUKA
Untrue, I go outside all the time. I just don’t know how to talk to people.
My first GF shat on Evangelion for having “a generic 90s artstyle”.
