Kira isn't the most popular season, but I wouldn't call it one of the least popular either.

Just because you were in /pc/ 24/7 during 2017 it doesn't mean the status quo never changed, but somehow you got really attached to the narratives around that period.
Hell, just look at any other season like Maho, Hugtto, Star Twinkle, etc. A lot of narratives from that period were forgotten and new fans are enjoying the shows.

This implies there's literally no one who actually likes the show which is nonsensical, but even if it was the case you still have examples like Touhou, it got a lot of momentum despite most fans being secondaries who don't know the actual lore very well, the aesthetic, vibe and music/remixes alone is enough to gather whole events and merchs that sell well.
