Kyle is a Green Lantern, but he's also an immensely powerful White Lantern (basically the guy full power of the emotional spectrum), who fucked with the Source (some super important metaphysical thing in DC cosmology), and has access to Life Equation. He lost after the creators, who are known for their bias towards DC, ruled that Simon is incredibly overpowered and evolves too fast for most people to catch up.
