From the explanation that gyro gives and what's show there doesn't seem to be anything that lets the user activate spin other than using the golden rotation for reference throughout the world

Later on when he uses his horse for golden rotation that's more believable because it required a start up to trigger it
Had it been something like drawing the stored rotational energy to cause the steel balls to spin then I'd have no problems with it

My only real problem with SBR for now is that Johnnny and Gyro still feel inconsistent as characters and without a "core" personality (ulike someone like Diego for example). I like everything else for now, especially the setting, golden spin schizobubble kino, fights and Johnny's backstory. But I'm afraid the thing with Gyro and Johnny not feeling like organic characters and them acting however the story needs them at the moment instead of acting like actual people with a set, core personality traits, that shit won't change. It sucks because I wanted to enjoy them as characters, but something just doesn't click for me. Their powers and everything in the world that happens around them is way more interesting and fun than them as characters.

Ringo deliberately engineers situations where his opponent has to shoot first because he wants to test them. He wants to see if people have the willingness to shoot first when put into a situation where that's the easiest way out. He sees it in Johnny and maybe Hot Pants, which is why he chooses to fight them while Gyro's hesitation to strike first made it so that he'd failed Ringo's test. That's why Ringo said he'd let Gyro leave.

I'm fairly sure it's Ringo using his power without explaining it to the reader, which goes to prove a point that Gyro doesn't go for kill shots if he doesn't have to. It's a little confusing because iirc Gyro seems to think it's his imagination after Mandom reverses time and flips out about his Steel Ball veering.
Meanwhile, Johnny, when provoked into attacking Ringo, uses Tusk to go for kill shots on Ringo.
Johnny is consistent in how he acts, but inconsistent in how Araki pretends how he acts.
Johnny is consistently not so much 'nice' as he is unwilling to get involved and make things worse. He doesn't start fights, he doesn't want to join in other people's crusades, he's willing to give up if he thinks it will let him survive another day.
But he's also willing to fight for his life or success when there's no other option.

After all, there would be no George without a Joestar before him. Though I do see an argument being made that within the context of the story, George is the one to start the family and whoever his father is would ultimately irrelevant to the legacy of the Joestars, as we never see or met him.

I think the slow increase in character complexity works really well up through the whole original universe, but Araki often tries too hard with characters in the new universe. He's just not that good at keeping character progression going for long periods of time, so he drops almost everything good about the people he writes after a while.
It's kind of weird how Araki chooses to make the Hapa Joestars horrible people compared to the White ones.
