The culmination of Greed's arc. The guy was always a tenuous ally, wavering between following Father or betraying him, never fully understanding why he was like this. Until this point, where he realized that as the greediest man in the world he loved having friends more than anything else and would fight and die to keep them.

Ed permanently sacrifices his leg and ability to perform alchemy, and everyone comes to learn more about what it means to live and care for other people, furthering their understanding of alchemy. This was Truth's goal all along.
