If he was smart he would have stopped chroming past ep6 and that would have been the end of the story. The reason he kept going into cyberpsychosis is because losing both his mom and his mentor lead him to get an imposter syndrome and get revenge onto the city.
The purpose of Cyberpunk is that Night city will swallow anyone inside no matter how good of a heart you have.

David was told he was special because of his capability to withstand cyberpsychosis, and he was to an extent. His mother's dream was for him to be successful and get to the top of Arasaka, when he was kicked out of the academy his dream became reaching the moon with Lucy, the cyberdeck he had was initially what he retrieved from his mom. The chrome was necessary to protect Lucy and the gang.
So you have a situation where without the chrome he doesn't really have a purpose. He can't achieve his goals, he's left with nothing and he's not using the special abilities he's been given. He's back at square one.

Ultimately though what killed him wasn't even the cyberpsychosis, he only fell for the Arasaka trap because he wanted to save Lucy. The cyberpsychosis just fucked him up bad and got everyone else killed.
