If a writer cares more about inserting some weird political virtue signalling (or in some cases downright propaganda) into his work, then it's basically impossible to keep the integrity of the work intact. While not incredible, Mad Max Fury Road is an example of a movie that's pure woke shit but breaks the mold by being well regarded by the general audience. The key really is just to not prioritize the message over the elements that make a story good.

What makes these series so kino is that they don't shy away from basal truths. Faye is sexy, because she's sexy. Hakim is prototypically black with bad motives, because he's black and a thief. There's no subterfuge there, the characters are authentically honest. There's no need to re-write or explain the character of the characters due to how the ideologue thinks things should be; it's written how they are. They have parallels to real life, but the suspension of disbelief is just as far as it's an anime.

Take Gintama' for example. There's an entire organization of crossdressing trannies in the show, led by pic related. It's watchable because the show doesn't try to lecture you about how these guys are actually women and you should be ashamed of yourself for disrespecting them. That very idea is ridiculous. I've literally never opened Anon Babble before and I came here to see what the fuck you guys were saying about this because I am so disappointed that I feel like I must be missing something.

It's like it has the bones of Cowboy Bebop, with the characters and the backstories in between camaraderie parts, but it has zero vibes. Somehow Bebop made me care about all of the character 10x more with what feels like half the screen time.

It's as I said earlier in the thread, the societal rot that permeates western media has seeped into this show. It robs it of its authenticity and destroys the very essence of good storytelling. Whether this is due to Netflix, or Watanabe being cajoled into allowing this to happen because he's lost touch or artistic control, it's hard to say. If you want a palate cleanser that at least has the spirit of anime I'd recommend Kijin Gentoushou and Frieren as two new shows that at least have some soul. These are especially normie recommendations so of course people here will have better examples to give you.

Well, kind of? In his first appearance in Gintama, Saigou knocks out Gintoki and Katsura for insulting him then forces them to work at his okama bar to make them understand what being an okama is like. He's not a one-note joke. He's meant to be a complex and badass character. After his wife died, he wanted to fill the mother role for his son and ended up like that. His son gets bullied because of him and whenever his son calls him dad, he corrects him and tells him to call him mom instead. Eventually Saigou's son gets sick of the other kids mocking his father because he knows how strong and manly he can be so he does a test of courage to vindicate him and gets attacked a giant alien beast. Then Saigou comes and is revealed to be a legendary war hero with superhuman strength from the generation before Gintoki and Katsura, and he defeats the monster with a single punch. When his son apologizes while calling him mom, he corrects him and tells him to call him dad.
