As far as standard power fantasy stuff goes, it’s pretty great, but the writing is also super basic and panties on head retarded at times. You have to look at it through the shounen jump lense to forgive its flaws. Though it’s hard to understand why it is so wanked by one side and reviled by the other.

I may be thinking too much about it, but I feel there's a grain of truth in this.
A lot of anime male leads are, generally speaking, good-natured but somewhat cringe. I feel that when it comes to normie anime, there are very few who really do capture the 'cool' aspect. Kirito might be close, but he has a 14-year-old's physique and is kind of a nerd.
Solo Leveling Man is basically 'cool' 24/7. More, he's very clearly handsome and has a great physique, in the conventional sense. He's very much what a teenager would love to imagine himself as, and he doesn't have the occasional awkward comedy moments that come with a lot of anime leads.
Just as importantly, he's focused on 'the grind'. He doesn't have many friends (except for that one dude he treats like a lackey) and tends to show off his power a lot more than other protagonists.
Oh yeah, and he actually kills people and monsters. For a 'modern' protagonist he's got quite a high body count, and (while technically he didn't consciously choose to do it, the system provides plausible deniability) he really did shank them all the same.
I felt the show has a paper-thin plot, but personally I like the decoupling of power from morality. SJW guy just doesn't really care about 'people' or 'fighting for my friends', a lot of the things he does is genuinely for his own personal benefit, which can be kind of refreshing.
He has absolutely no sense of the social good.
